Culture
Mallorca is a traditional Spanish island with a rich history and culture. The locals are deeply attached to their traditions and this is generally displayed in many of the fiestas which are celebrated across the island. Mallorca offers a rich and diverse heritage with architectural offerings ranging from Gothic, Arabic and Moorish influences. Museums are plentiful with interesting artifacts and as Mallorca has long been home to a plethora of writers and artists there are a large number of art galleries displaying works by local and world famous artists.
Here are a few of the local cultural attractions worth considering:
Palma Cathedral - According to legend, whilst sailing to Majorca in 1230 to recapture it from the Moors, Jaime I's fleet was hit by a major storm. He prayed to the Virgin Mary and vowed that if he survived the storm he would build a church in her honor. Work on it began in 1306 and has continued to this day with controversial touches added in the 20th century by Gaudi.
Palma and Castillo de Bellver - Most of the main sights of Palma are contained within the city walls and it's easy to explore on foot. If you can be there after nightfall it is a spectacular sight to see the floodlit Cathedral and the Almudaina Palace from the waterfront.
Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum – is located in Palma set into the medieval walls. The Museum has rooms which are devoted to Picasso and Miro. Miro came to Palma in 1956 where he lived and worked until his death in 1983.
Lluc Monastery – is the islands spiritual centre and attracts 100’s of pilgrims each year. The main interest is the statue of the virgin which as legend tells it was found by an Arab shepherd boy who had converted to Christianity. The image was initially moved to the church but it kept returning to the same spot.
Deia – is mostly associated with the poet and novelist robert graves who settled here in 1929. Towering over the town is the church of Sant Joan Baptista which is where Graves was buried. The Museu Arqueologic in Deia displays the pre-history of Mallorca.
Fiestas - Get the blood racing and bring out the latino spirit with the number of different festivals taking place in Alcudia, Pollensa and Cala Sant Vincenc between early June and August.
